Teacher Of Righteousness From Quamran Texts Prophecy
This 'Teacher of Righteousness' grew out of the Dead Sea Scrolls found in the caves at Qumran. While there is considerable scholarly discussion as to who hid these documents within the caves, the authenticity, and dating of them cannot be denied.
Whether they are of one sect of Judaism, or another, is not as important as the contents of the fragments. But, unfortunately, only a few have been released since they have been found. Most are locked away in museums, or private collections, awaiting public scrutiny and translation.
The few that have been released, paint a picture of ancient Judaism that has been lost for centuries, both to time and the egotism of the rulers of empires and religions.
The Dead Sea Scrolls prove that many Ancient sects of Judaism venerated extant writings to the Tanakh. The 'Book of Enoch' and the 'Testament of the Twelve Patriarchs' are two amongst the many writings that were found within the caves of Qumran.
Before the Dead Sea Scrolls were found, the idea of the 'Teacher of Righteousness' came from the Apocalypse of Weeks from the 'Book of Enoch':
'And at its end, the Chosen Righteous, from the Eternal Plant of Righteousness, will be chosen, to whom will be given Sevenfold Teaching, concerning his whole creation. ’
Book of Enoch 93:10
According to the documents found at Qumran, the 'Teacher of Righteousness' was, or will be, a man who teaches his followers the Truth of the Kingdom of God, and corrects many of the inaccuracies of the religious interpretation fundamental to the religions of man.
The 'Teacher of Righteousness' was, or will be, a priest, a son of Levi.
The 'Teacher of Righteousness' is described within the documents as a 'Messiah of Aaron and Israel'.
The 'Teacher of Righteousness' was, or will be, a learned master of the Laws, and Mysteries, of God.
The 'Teacher of Righteousness' was, or will be, an author, writing volumes of information to correct the past.
'He will cause a plant root to spring from Israel and Aaron to inherit His Land and to prosper on the good things of His earth. And they will perceive their iniquity and will recognize that they are guilty men, yet for 20 years they will be like blind men groping for a way. And God will observe their deeds, that they sought Him with a whole heart, and He will raise for them a Teacher of Righteousness to guide them in the way of His heart.’
Damascus Document 16
The 'Teacher of Righteousness' will gather a community in which his followers will live by the precepts that he has given them. Since he is understood to have the 'spirit of Truth', is a 'son of Light', and has the understanding of the 'light of Life', he is successful in creating this community for the betterment of his followers, and society as a whole.
In the Cairo Genizah copies of the Damascus Document, we read:
'God raised for them a Teacher of Righteousness to guide them in the way of His heart. . .This is the time concerning which it has been written: “As a backsliding heifer so did Israel slide back”(Hosea 4:16), when there arose the Man of Scoffing who dropped on Israel waters of deceitfulness and caused them to wander in the wilderness where there is no path, to bring down the everlasting heights, to turn away from the ways of righteousness and to remove the boundary that the forefathers have set for their inheritance.’
Damascus Document 1:10–171
The 'Teacher of Righteousness' and the Wicked Priest, the Man of Scoffing, reappear in various places of the Damascus Document. This Wicked Priest, either a real person or not, represents societal norms of the day. When the time of the 'Teacher of Righteousness' presents itself to the world, society is in a state of apostasy, and the 'accepted' religions have lost all remnants of the 'true' teachings.
As Enoch states:
'And after this, in the seventh week, an apostate generation will arise. And many will be its deeds - but all its deeds will be apostasy.’
Book of Enoch 93:9
So, this 'Teacher of Righteousness' would be considered a person who appeared in the future of the writers of the 'Damascus Document', as they used the 'Book of Enoch' as their basis for their prophecies. And, that is in fact the case with a few passages within the 'Damascus Document'. Instead of a past tense form, a future tense form of the language is used in which the translation would be "he who will teach righteousness". In fact in 'Damascus Document 6:8-11, it tells us of "one who will teach righteousness at the end of days". This, as well as many references to the 'Teacher of Righteousness', points to end time prophecy, consistent with other prophecies within the Tanakh, and extant works.
This is consistent with the interpretations of the 'Pesharim', or biblical commentaries on the books of the prophets and the psalms, found at Qumran. The 'Pesharim' quote a passage from Scripture and then give an interpretation. The Qumran 'Pesharim' frequently refer to the 'Teacher of Righteousness' in a messianic context. This is the interpretation of 'Habakkuk 2:5ff':
'Then God told Habakkuk to write down what is going to happen to the generation to come; but when that period would be complete He did not make known to him. When it says, “so that with ease someone can read it,” this refers to the Teacher of Righteousness to whom God made known all the mysterious revelations of his servants the prophets.’
Pesher Habakkuk, Col. 7:1–5
So, not only did the writers of these ancient documents know about the coming of the 'Teacher of Righteousness', they were in some way preparing for his appearance, and for his ministry. Even thought they understood that the 'Teacher of Righteousness' would 'guide them(Humanity) in the way of His (God's) Heart', through Divine guidance, they also understood that if the 'Teacher of Righteousness' appeared at the 'End of Days', from within a generation of apostasy, he would need all the help he could get.
Did the community that hid these documents within the caves of Qumran know that these documents would be found during the last century, towards the end of 'the seventh week', as Enoch predicted?
And, who was instrumental in directing the community at Qumran to hide these documents in the caves?
If we are to understand the prophecy of the Tanakh that there will be two 'Anointed Ones' who will work together to usher in the Messianic Age, could the first 'Anointed One' be talking to the second 'Anointed One' through the 'river of time', as mentioned in Daniel 12:5?
Could Yeshua, the first 'Anointed One' of the tribe of Judah, be speaking across time to his brother, the second 'Anointed One' of the tribe of Levi, the 'Teacher of Righteousness'?
The 'Teacher of Righteousness', from the tribe of Levi, will 'guide Humanity in the ways of God's Heart' and will help usher in the 'Messianic Age'!
